Experience
Nathan Baney is a partner at Plave Koch with significant experience handling bankruptcy, restructuring, and complex litigation matters in federal and state courts. His practice focuses on representing clients in high-stakes disputes involving financial distress and tax-related litigation.
Prior to joining his previous firm, Nate served as a Trial Attorney in the U.S. Department of Justice’s Tax Division, where he litigated matters referred by the Internal Revenue Service. In that role, he handled motions practice, discovery, trial work and appeals in bankruptcy-related matters. His work frequently involved disputes concerning tax liabilities, dischargeability issues and claims arising in Chapter 11 proceedings. For his work at the DOJ, Nate received the division’s Outstanding Attorney Award.
While at the DOJ, Nate was also active in training and advising other attorneys on the intersection of bankruptcy and tax law. He taught courses for new trial attorneys, led internal seminars and served as a member of the DOJ Tax Division Bankruptcy Committee on Exempt Property and Secured Claims.
Earlier in his career, Nate built and led a practice concentrating on consumer protection matters. He also has substantial courtroom experience representing clients in a wide range of disputes, including personal injury defense, construction law, financial litigation, and premises liability matters.
Outside the office, Nate is actively involved in his community. Since 2016, he has served as a coach and league director for youth basketball and soccer. He is also a certified U.S. Soccer referee, officiating recreational and travel matches for youth and adult rec leagues.
